Keeping the Little Ones Engaged Without Electronics

Hello, fellow parents!

As a mom of three energetic boys, I know how challenging it can be to keep the kids entertained during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. With the aroma of delicious food filling the house and the adults busy preparing the feast, it’s tempting to hand over a tablet or switch on the TV to keep the little ones occupied. But this year, I decided to try something different. Here are some tried-and-tested activities that not only kept my boys engaged but also made our Thanksgiving more memorable and less stressful:

1. DIY Craft Station

   :  Set up a little craft station with colored paper, markers, glue, and scissors. Encourage the kids to make Thanksgiving-themed crafts like turkeys, pilgrim hats, or even gratitude cards. It’s a great way for them to get creative and also make decorations for the dinner table.

2. Kitchen Helpers

   : Depending on their age, get the kids involved in the kitchen. Simple tasks like mashing potatoes, stirring the gravy, or setting the table can make them feel included and responsible.

3. Outdoor Play

   : If the weather permits, send the kids outside for a game of football or tag. Not only will it burn off some energy, but it’ll also give them a break from being indoors.

4. Storytime

   : Gather around and share stories of past Thanksgivings or tales from when you were a kid. It’s a wonderful way to bond and teach them about family traditions.

5. Thanksgiving Bingo

   : Create a bingo card with Thanksgiving-themed items or activities. As they spot or do each item, they can mark it off. The first one to get a bingo gets a special treat!

6. Dance Party

   : Put on some music and have a dance-off! It’s a fun way to get everyone moving and laughing.

7. Gratitude Jar

   : Have everyone write down something they’re thankful for and put it in a jar. During dinner, take turns reading them out loud. It’s a beautiful reminder of what the day is truly about.

Remember, the key is to plan ahead and have a mix of indoor and outdoor activities – screen-free activities. With a little creativity and preparation, you can ensure that everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, is involved and having fun. And the best part? No screens involved!
